Luscious Royale Cosmo Lantana

Lantana camara 'DLANTAN95'

Luscious Royale Cosmo Lantana produces dense clusters of vibrant blooms that shift between pink, vibrant orange, and soft yellow tones. The flower color remains strong throughout the heat of the season, offering continuous interest from late spring through fall. With a mounding growth habit that reaches up to 1 foot in height and 1.5 in width, it fits well into layered plantings and seasonal displays. The compact form and bright color also make it a popular choice for container arrangements and commercial spaces where tidy, neat plants are preferred. Its consistent blooming and strong color hold make it ideal for warm climates, including North Texas.

  •  Multicolored blooms in magenta, rose, and yellow
  •  Mounded habit to 12 inches tall and 18 inches wide
  •  Long bloom window from spring through fall
  •  Heat-tolerant
  •  Works well in containers and seasonal beds

Plant in full sun with well-drained soil. Deadhead to promote continued flowering and cut back lightly in early spring. While primarily used outdoors, its compact size makes it suitable for short-term indoor display near bright windows.

Maintenance

Once established, Luscious Royale Cosmo Lantana is delightfully easy to care for, rewarding minimal effort with continuous color all season long. Here’s how to keep it thriving:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots develop deeply. After that, this lantana becomes highly drought-tolerant, needing only occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. Always allow the top inch of soil to dry before watering again. Avoid waterlogging, as soggy conditions can cause root problems and reduce blooming.
  • Pruning: Trim back spent blooms throughout the season to encourage nonstop flowering. A light shearing mid-season keeps the plant compact and tidy. In late winter or early spring, prune back by about one-third to refresh growth and stimulate an even stronger flush of flowers.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly once in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Overfeeding can cause excessive leafy growth and fewer flowers, so less is more with lantanas. Container-grown plants may benefit from a light mid-season feeding to maintain vigor.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and discourage weeds. Keep mulch a few inches from the crown to prevent rot, especially in humid regions. Refresh annually in spring to maintain optimal soil conditions.
  • Winter care: In mild climates, Luscious Royale Cosmo Lantana often survives winter with minimal protection. In colder zones, treat it as an annual or overwinter indoors in a bright, frost-free space. Before the first frost, trim back lightly and apply mulch over the root zone to insulate against temperature drops.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

Luscious Royale Cosmo Lantana is generally hardy and pest-resistant, but here are a few things to keep an eye on:

  • Powdery Mildew: Appears as a white powdery coating on leaves, especially in humid or poorly ventilated spots. Improve air circulation, water at the base, and apply a fungicide if needed.
  • Aphids: Small green or black insects that gather on new growth. Remove them with a strong spray of water or treat with insecticidal soap.
  • Whiteflies: Tiny flying insects that thrive in hot conditions and cause leaf yellowing. Use sticky traps and introduce natural predators like ladybugs or apply horticultural oil to keep populations low.
  • Root Rot: Caused by excessive moisture or poor drainage. Let the soil dry slightly between waterings and ensure containers or beds have proper drainage.
  • Spider Mites: These pests cause speckled, bronzed leaves in hot, dry conditions. Misting the foliage occasionally and using neem oil or insecticidal soap helps manage outbreaks.
  • Leggy Growth: Can occur if blooms aren’t deadheaded regularly or if plants go too long without pruning. Shear lightly to rejuvenate compact growth and promote fresh flowering.

Plant in spring or early fall when temperatures are mild, allowing roots to establish before the intense summer heat or winter cold.

Yes, it performs beautifully in pots or hanging planters. Just make sure the container drains well and water a bit more frequently than garden-grown plants.

Yes, removing spent flowers encourages continuous blooming and prevents seed formation, which can slow down new growth.

Completely. Once mature, it thrives with minimal watering and is a favorite for low-water landscapes.

Yes. Cut it back, place it in a sunny window or under grow lights, and water sparingly through winter. Move it back outside after the last frost.

It loves the heat - in fact, hot weather enhances its blooming performance. Just ensure consistent watering during extreme heatwaves.

Yes, its aromatic foliage tends to deter deer and rabbits, making it a great choice for wildlife-heavy areas.

Typically several years in warm climates where it can overwinter. In colder zones, it’s often treated as an annual.

Very! Take softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer, root them in moist soil, and you’ll have new plants within weeks.

Definitely. It pairs beautifully with drought-tolerant companions like verbena, salvia, and ornamental grasses for a vivid, pollinator-friendly display.
