Gaudi Red Gaura

Oenothera lindheimeri 'Florgaure'

Gaudi Red Gaura offers a bold twist on a native favorite, producing vivid hot pink flowers that float above a base of fine green foliage. Its blooms open continuously from early summer through fall, giving months of color without overwhelming nearby plants. With a mature size of 12 inches in height and width, it stays compact and tidy, making it ideal for front borders, mixed perennial beds, or container use. The flowering stems sway gently in the breeze, bringing movement and softness to structured plantings.

  • Rich red-pink flowers from spring to fall
  • Fine green foliage with upright stems
  • Neat, compact growth habit to 12 inches
  • Excellent heat performance
  • Brings color and motion to sunny beds

This perennial will thrive in full sun with well-drained soil. Well-adapted to North Texas heat and soil, this easy-care compact plant provides lasting seasonal interest in a compact form. Deadhead spent blooms to extend flowering and trim back in early spring.

Gaudi Red Gaura is an overall resilient and low-maintenance plant, needing only consistency to thrive. Here’s all you need to know:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep, strong roots. Once mature, Gaudi Red thrives in dry to moderately moist soil and only needs occasional deep watering during prolonged droughts. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
  • Pruning: Shear back spent flower stems by one-third in midsummer to encourage dense regrowth and additional blooming. In late winter or early spring, cut the entire plant back to 4-6 inches to stimulate vigorous new shoots. Regular light trimming keeps the plant compact and prolongs its flowering season.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or compost. Too much fertilizer results in soft, floppy growth with fewer blooms. A lean, well-drained soil environment helps maintain strong stems and continuous flowering.
  • Mulching: Apply a thin 2-3 inch layer of mulch or fine gravel around the base to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Keep mulch a couple of inches away from the crown to prevent rot. Refresh the layer annually for a clean, healthy growing area.
  • Winter Care: Gaudi Red Gaura is hardy and survives mild winters with ease. In colder regions, allow stems to stand over winter to protect the crown, then cut them back once new growth appears in spring.

This hardy, sun-loving perennial is largely pest-free, but occasional minor problems can appear in very wet or humid conditions:

  • Powdery Mildew: A light, white coating forms on leaves in humid, still air. Prune to improve airflow and avoid overhead watering.
  • Aphids: Clusters of small insects gather on young shoots, causing slight curling. Wash them off with a strong stream of water or use insecticidal soap.
  • Spider Mites: Fine webbing and faded leaves occur during hot, dry weather. Rinse foliage periodically and increase humidity to deter them.
  • Rust: Orange or rust-colored pustules appear on lower leaves. Trim affected areas and treat with a sulfur-based fungicide to prevent spread.
  • Slugs and Snails: Chewed edges or holes in young foliage indicate feeding. Use traps or barriers to prevent damage.
  • Botrytis Blight: Gray mold can develop on fading flowers in cool, damp weather. Remove spent blooms promptly and ensure adequate spacing between plants.

When planted in well-drained soil, it can live for several years, renewing itself each season with fresh growth. Regular spring cutbacks help maintain vigor and longevity.

It grows quickly and begins blooming in its first season. Within two years, it forms a full, compact mound that flowers almost continuously from late spring onward.
