Double Play Dolly Spirea

Spiraea x 'SMNSJSA'

Double Play Dolly Spirea is a lively little powerhouse, offering multiseason interest in a tidy form. In early spring, it pushes out dramatic yellow and orange foliage. Then, in late spring to summer, it explodes with bold magenta-pink flower clusters. With its mounded shape and moderate size - about 1.5 feet tall and wide - this shrub fits beautifully into small beds, walkways, or mass plantings.

  • Deciduous shrub
  • Moderate growth rate with neat, compact shape
  • Richly colored new foliage in spring
  • Bright magenta-pink blooms in spring and summer
  • Great for edging, massing, or container use

Plant in full sun for the best foliage color and flower production. Hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, Double Play Dolly Spirea is a vibrant, no-fuss option that brings bold personality and dependable beauty to any space.

Double Play Dolly Spirea is a low-maintenance flowering shrub that establishes quickly and performs reliably with minimal intervention once settled in. Here’s what it needs to stay dense, colorful, and full of blooms:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to develop a strong, fibrous root system that supports dense growth and flowering. Once established, this spirea is moderately drought-tolerant and only needs supplemental watering during extended dry periods.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead wood and stimulate vigorous new growth. Light trimming after the spring bloom helps maintain its compact shape and often encourages fresh foliage color and additional flowering. Occasional rejuvenation pruning every few years keeps plants from becoming woody.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support foliage color and bloom production. Most established plants perform well with just one annual feeding.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed competition. Keep mulch slightly away from stems to prevent moisture-related issues.
  • Winter Care: Double Play Dolly Spirea is very cold-hardy and typically needs no winter protection once established. Plants reliably resprout in spring even after harsh winters.

Double Play Dolly Spirea is durable and adaptable, though a few manageable issues may occasionally arise.

  • Powdery Mildew: A light white coating may appear on leaves during humid weather with limited airflow. Improving air circulation and avoiding overhead watering helps prevent recurrence.
  • Leaf Spot: Dark or irregular spotting may develop during prolonged wet conditions. Removing affected foliage and keeping the area clean helps reduce the spread.
  • Aphids: Clusters of small insects may appear on new growth, causing curling or sticky residue. Rinsing shoots with water or using insecticidal soap provides effective control.
  • Spider Mites: Fine stippling or pale foliage may occur during hot, dry periods. Increasing humidity and periodically rinsing foliage help reduce mite populations.
  • Winter Dieback: Branch tips may die back after unusually severe winters. Pruning in early spring removes damaged growth and encourages healthy regrowth.

With proper care, this shrub commonly lives 20-30 years. Periodic pruning helps keep plants vigorous as they age. Mature specimens often maintain strong flowering for decades.

Growth is moderate, averaging about 8-12 inches per year. A full, rounded form is typically reached within 2-3 years. Plants remain compact without becoming unruly.

Clusters of bright pink flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies. The flat-topped blooms are easy for pollinators to access. Planting multiple shrubs increases overall activity.

Browsing pressure is generally low, though young plants may be sampled occasionally. Established shrubs usually recover quickly. Damage is rarely severe or long-lasting.

Heat tolerance is excellent once roots are established. Mulching and occasional deep watering help maintain leaf quality during hot summers. Flowering remains reliable in warm conditions.

Division can be done in early spring or fall if needed. This is useful for rejuvenating older plants or managing size. Divisions establish quickly when kept evenly moist.

This variety works extremely well in mass plantings and low borders. Repetition creates bold color impact in spring and summer. Groupings remain neat with minimal upkeep.

Ornamental grasses, coneflowers, daylilies, and low evergreens pair beautifully with its bright foliage and flowers. These companions extend seasonal interest. Mixed plantings create a layered, balanced look.

Growth remains controlled and well-behaved. Occasional thinning easily manages width. It does not spread invasively into surrounding areas.

Once established, care requirements are minimal. Disease issues are uncommon and pruning needs are modest. This makes it an excellent choice for easy-care gardens and commercial plantings.
