Ajuga reptans ‘Burgundy Glow’

Burgundy Glow Ajuga is a gorgeous herbaceous groundcover that will enrich any landscape. It grows only 6 inches in height and 12 inches in width. But this small plant has great beauty - featuring green to purple leaves with distinctive clusters of royal purple flowers. This perennial will look exquisite no matter where you plant it - in a landscape, mixed planting, flower bed, or even a container by itself.

  • Herbaceous groundcover
  • Moderate growth rate with spreading habits
  • Green-purple foliage with purple flower clusters
  • An incredible choice for anything from beds to planters
  • Blooms in spring through summer

The Burgundy Glow Ajuga loves both full and partial sun, so choose your planting spot accordingly. When it comes to soil, it will thrive in types that are rich and moist. If you're using this plant as groundcover, space them 12 inches apart to ensure enough room.

Burgundy Glow Ajuga is a stunning, low-maintenance groundcover that delivers year-round interest with minimal effort. Here’s everything you need to know to help it thrive:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a deep root system. Once established, Burgundy Glow Ajuga is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture. Water deeply whenever the top inch of soil dries out. Avoid waterlogging, which can lead to crown rot.
  • Pruning: Trim or shear back runners in spring or after flowering to control spread and maintain a tidy appearance. Remove any dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking fresh. Occasional light pruning encourages denser growth and prevents the foliage from becoming too leggy.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy foliage and blooms. Avoid heavy feeding, as excess nitrogen can reduce leaf color intensity and encourage sprawling growth.
  • Mulching: Apply a thin layer of organic or gravel mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid piling mulch directly against the crown to prevent rot.
  • Winter Care: Burgundy Glow Ajuga is hardy in most climates and tolerates light frost. In regions with harsh winters, provide a thin layer of mulch for added protection, but ensure airflow around the plant.

While Burgundy Glow Ajuga is resilient, it may encounter a few common issues:

  • Crown Rot: Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure the soil drains well and avoid frequent shallow watering. Remove affected plants promptly to prevent spread.
  • Powdery Mildew: White, powdery coating may appear on leaves in humid or shaded conditions. Increase airflow, avoid overhead watering, and prune affected areas. Fungicide may be used if necessary.
  • Leaf Spot: Small brown or black spots can develop during wet weather. Remove affected leaves, space plants for airflow, and maintain proper watering practices.
  • Leggy Growth: Overcrowding or insufficient pruning can cause runners to become sparse. Regular trimming and spacing help maintain a dense, colorful mat.
  • Pests: Aphids, slugs, or snails may occasionally feed on leaves. Hand-pick or use insecticidal soap or slug deterrents as needed.

With proper care, it can thrive for many years as a durable, spreading groundcover. Lifespan often exceeds 5-10 years when runners are maintained and the crown remains healthy.

It spreads moderately quickly via runners, forming a dense mat within one to two growing seasons. Runners root easily, filling gaps efficiently.

Yes. It tolerates heat well and performs reliably in humid conditions if airflow is adequate and watering is managed.

Absolutely. It works beautifully in pots, window boxes, and raised planters. Make sure containers have drainage holes and water consistently during the growing season.

While primarily grown for foliage, it produces spikes of blue flowers in spring. Deadheading spent blooms can extend flowering slightly, though the foliage remains the main attraction.
