Maintenance

At Last Rose is a charming, compact shrub rose admired for its disease-resistant qualities. Its tidy, spreading habit makes it perfect for borders, mass plantings, containers, or as a groundcover in Texas landscapes. Here’s how to care for it:

  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently during the first 1-2 years to establish a strong root system. Once established, At Last tolerates moderate drought but flowers best with evenly moist soil. Avoid waterlogged conditions to protect roots.
  • Pruning: Lightly prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing stems and encourage healthy, dense growth. Deadhead spent blooms throughout the season to promote continuous flowering. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood to maintain bloom production.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again in mid-summer to support vibrant blooms and healthy foliage. Incorporate organic compost or mulch to improve soil structure and long-term vigor. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages leaf growth over flowers.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch slightly away from the crown to prevent rot. Refresh annually for best results.
  • Winter Care: At Last Rose is hardy in USDA zones 5-9. Young plants may benefit from light winter protection such as mulch or burlap, particularly in colder regions. Mature plants typically tolerate mild winters without extra care.

At Last is generally disease-resistant but may face minor issues under stress or poor conditions:

  • Black Spot or Powdery Mildew: Yellowing leaves or white powder may appear in humid conditions. Improve airflow, remove affected foliage, and avoid overhead watering to reduce disease pressure.
  • Aphids: Curling leaves or sticky honeydew indicate aphid activity. Wash foliage with water or use insecticidal soap to control populations.
  • Leaf Drop: Stress from heat, drought, or overwatering can cause minor leaf loss. Maintaining consistent moisture helps prevent recurrence.
  • Leggy Growth: Light pruning encourages fuller, compact growth and more abundant flowering.

With proper care, it typically lives 10-15 years, maintaining its compact, spreading habit and prolific blooms.

It grows moderately, about 6-12 inches per year, and reaches its mature size of 12-18 inches tall and 2-3 feet wide within 2-3 years.
