Wedding Gown Hydrangea

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Dancing Snow’

Wedding Gown Hydrangea is a lacecap variety prized for its crisp white double flowers that bloom on both old and new wood. It grows to a compact 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide, forming a neat mound that's ideal for shaded foundations or patio beds. Flowering begins in early summer and can continue into early fall with consistent deadheading. The central fertile florets are surrounded by outer layers of frilly white petals, resembling a wedding dress in motion. The medium green foliage provides a clean backdrop, and its tidy habit makes it excellent for smaller landscapes or formal layouts.

  • White double blooms on compact shrub
  • Blooms from spring into fall
  • Grows up to 3 feet wide
  • Elegant lacecap flower form
  • Ideal for shade beds or containers

Wedding Gown prefers part shade and rich, well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA zones 5–9, it is a refined choice for North Texas beds where soft seasonal color is needed.

Wedding Gown Hydrangea is a refined oakleaf hydrangea celebrated for its abundant double white blooms and easy-going nature, thriving in Texas landscapes with minimal maintenance:

  • Watering: Water consistently during the first growing season to establish a deep, spreading root system. Once established, Wedding Gown Hydrangea is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with regular moisture during hot or extended dry periods, especially while flowering.
  • Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering if shaping is needed, as blooms form on old wood. Avoid late-season pruning, which can remove developing flower buds and reduce the following year’s bloom display.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy foliage and strong bloom development. Avoid excessive fertilization, which may encourage leaf growth at the expense of flowers.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and protect shallow roots. Extending the mulch ring outward as the plant matures helps reduce root competition and stabilize soil conditions.
  • Winter Care: Wedding Gown Hydrangea is cold-hardy and typically requires no winter protection once established. In colder climates, winter mulch helps protect roots and flower buds from freeze–thaw cycles.

Wedding Gown Hydrangea is dependable and resilient, though a mix of environmental stressors, pests, and diseases may occasionally arise:

  • Reduced Flowering: Bloom production may decline if pruning is done too late in the season. Pruning only immediately after flowering preserves next year’s buds.
  • Leaf Scorch: Leaf edges may brown during extreme heat or dry winds. Consistent watering and light afternoon shade help reduce stress.
  • Powdery Mildew: A white, dusty coating may appear on foliage during humid conditions with limited airflow. Improving air circulation and avoiding overhead watering helps prevent recurrence.
  • Deer Browsing: Tender new growth may be browsed in spring. Temporary fencing or repellents protect plants during establishment.
  • Root Competition: Growth may slow when planted near large trees with aggressive root systems. Supplemental watering and mulching help offset competition.

Wedding Gown Hydrangea typically lives 30-50 years with proper care. Its woody structure and steady growth support long-term performance. Mature plants often become fuller and more floriferous with age.

It grows at a moderate rate, adding approximately 8-14 inches per year. Light flowering often begins within a few years, with full size and peak bloom reached in 5-7 years. Its layered form becomes more graceful as it matures.

The blooms attract bees and other beneficial insects in early summer. Flowering aligns with active pollinator periods. Group plantings increase insect activity and visibility.

Wedding Gown Hydrangea is considered moderately deer-resistant once established. Young plants may experience browsing. Mature shrubs are generally less appealing.

It can be grown in large containers during its early years. Containers help control placement and soil conditions. Long-term growth is best achieved when planted in the ground.

Division is not recommended due to its woody growth habit. New plants are best established from nursery-grown stock. Attempting division often weakens mature plants.

Mass plantings create a romantic, layered effect with abundant white blooms. Repetition enhances texture and seasonal impact. Groupings amplify its cascading floral display.

Wedding Gown Hydrangea pairs beautifully with ferns, hostas, native shrubs, and ornamental grasses. Fine-textured companions complement its bold foliage. These combinations create elegant woodland compositions.

It maintains a clumping, non-invasive habit. It does not spread aggressively or sucker excessively. Minimal pruning keeps growth well controlled.

Once established, it requires little care beyond watering and occasional pruning. Its multi-season interest reduces the need for frequent replacement. Reliable performance makes it ideal for naturalized settings.
