Pearl Glam Beautyberry

Callicarpa x ‘NCCX2’

Pearl Glam Beautyberry is an eye-catching deciduous shrub that brings multi-season interest to any landscape. In summer, delicate light pink flowers appear in soft clusters, creating a beautiful contrast against the deep purple foliage. By fall, bright violet berries add another layer of color and texture. Compact and tidy, it reaches up to 4 feet in height and 4 feet in width at maturity, making it an excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, or as a standout in containers.

  • A deciduous shrub
  • Upright, compact growth habit
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Light pink flowers blooming in summer
  • Vibrant berries and colorful foliage for added interest

Pearl Glam Beautyberry is hardy in zones 5–8 and will fit seamlessly into your North Texas landscape. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. Remove spent blooms to support new growth and maintain a fresh look throughout the season.

Pearl Glam Beautyberry combines bold color with a low-maintenance nature to bring beauty to landscapes across Texas. Here’s all it needs to thrive:

Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong, fibrous root system. Once established, Pearl Glam Beautyberry is moderately drought-tolerant and performs best with deep, occasional watering during extended dry periods.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges to maintain shape and encourage strong berry production. Removing older or weak stems helps direct energy into vigorous new growth that supports heavier fruiting.

Fertilizing: Once established, Pearl Glam Beautyberry typically requires little fertilizer. If growth appears weak, a light application of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring is sufficient.

Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch pulled a few inches away from the stems to prevent moisture-related issues.

Winter Care: Pearl Glam Beautyberry is cold-hardy and requires no winter protection once established. In winter, foliage drops, revealing a clean branching structure, with fresh growth returning reliably in spring.

Pearl Glam Beautyberry is dependable and adaptable, though a few issues may appear under stress or improper conditions:

  • Sparse Berry Production: Plants may produce fewer berries if growth is weak or improperly pruned. Pruning in late winter and encouraging strong new shoots improves fruit set.
  • Leaf Spot: Dark or irregular spots may appear on foliage during prolonged wet weather. Remove affected leaves and improve air circulation to reduce recurrence.
  • Aphids: Small insects may cluster on new growth, causing curling leaves and sticky residue. Rinsing plants with water or applying insecticidal soap provides effective control.
  • Leggy Growth: Plants may become open or stretched if older stems are not periodically removed. Selective pruning restores a fuller, more compact form.
  • Winter Dieback: Occasional tip dieback may occur after harsh winters. Pruning damaged wood in early spring encourages healthy regrowth.

Pearl Glam Beautyberry typically lives 20-30 years with proper care. Its woody structure and steady growth allow it to remain a long-term landscape feature. Mature plants often improve in berry production over time.

Pearl Glam Beautyberry grows at a moderate rate, adding approximately 12-18 inches per year. Light flowering and fruiting may occur within the first two years, with full size and peak berry display reached in 3-4 years. Growth remains upright and controlled as the shrub matures.

Small, pale flowers attract bees and other beneficial insects in late spring and early summer. Pollination is essential for strong berry production later in the season. Planting in groups can improve pollinator activity and fruit set.

Pearl Glam Beautyberry is considered moderately deer-resistant. Browsing may occur on young growth but is usually limited. Established shrubs typically recover quickly from minor damage.

It can be grown in large containers, though in-ground planting is preferred for long-term performance. Containers allow controlled placement and highlight their foliage and berries. More frequent watering is required when grown in pots.

Division is not recommended due to its woody growth habit. New plants are best established from nursery-grown stock or cuttings. Attempting division often results in poor recovery.

Mass plantings create dramatic swaths of purple foliage and heavy berry displays. Uniform growth keeps groupings cohesive and visually strong. Group plantings also enhance seasonal impact.

It pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, coneflowers, black-eyed Susan, and evergreen shrubs. Lighter or silver-toned foliage contrasts nicely with its dark leaves. These combinations provide strong multi-season interest.

It maintains a controlled, non-invasive growth habit. It does not spread aggressively or sucker extensively. Occasional pruning keeps growth refined.

Pearl Glam Beautyberry stands out for its rich purple foliage paired with vivid violet berries. It delivers color in both leaf and fruit when many shrubs fade. Few deciduous shrubs offer such a dramatic late-season impact with so little effort.
