Olive Martini Elaeagnus

Elaegnus ebbengii ‘Viveleg’

Olive Martini Elaeagnus is a beautiful evergreen tree valued for its variegated leaves that add a soft, shimmering texture to any landscape. It grows between 10 feet in height and width, forming a neat, rounded shape. This shrub produces small, fragrant flowers in fall, attracting pollinators. It is drought-resistant once established, making it ideal for hedges, screens, and foundation plantings that require both beauty and resilience.

  • Evergreen tree
  • Fast growth rate with dense, rounded habit
  • Olive green leaves lined with gold
  • Small, fragrant flowers in fall
  • Produces berries

Olive Martini Elaeagnus thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil.  Known for its adaptability and drought tolerance, this tree performs well in a variety of soil types and conditions, making it a resilient and no-fuss option for Texas beds. Hardy in USDA zones 6 through 9.

Once established, Olive Martini Elaeagnus becomes notably low-maintenance and develops into a resilient shrub that requires only modest seasonal attention. Here’s all it needs:

  • Watering: Water consistently during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. After establishment, occasional deep watering during extended dry periods helps maintain healthy growth and stable foliage.
  • Pruning: Pruning is usually minimal and limited to removing damaged or overly long branches. Light trimming in late winter or early spring helps maintain a balanced shape while preserving the shrub’s natural form.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilizer is rarely required in average garden soils. If growth appears weak, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring can encourage stronger seasonal development.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone to conserve soil moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the base of the stems to prevent excess moisture buildup.
  • Winter Care: Established plants tolerate seasonal cold well within their growing zones. Young shrubs benefit from mulch around the root zone during their first winters to help stabilize soil temperatures.

Olive Martini Elaeagnus is generally tough and dependable, though occasional pests or environmental stress can appear.

  • Scale Insects: Small raised bumps may appear along stems as scale insects feed on plant sap. Horticultural oil applications help suppress infestations.
  • Spider Mites: Fine stippling on leaves may occur during hot, dry weather. Periodic rinsing of foliage with water can help reduce mite populations.
  • Leaf Spot: Dark spots may develop on foliage during prolonged humidity. Removing affected leaves helps limit fungal spread.
  • Root Stress from Poor Drainage: Waterlogged soil may weaken the root system over time. Improving soil drainage helps maintain plant health.
  • Wind Damage: Strong winds may occasionally break or bend outer branches. Pruning damaged stems helps restore the shrub’s structure.

Olive Martini Elaeagnus can live for several decades when grown in favorable conditions. Mature shrubs often remain healthy and vigorous for many years. Proper planting and occasional maintenance help support longevity.

Growth generally averages about 12-24 inches per year. Noticeable size develops within a few growing seasons. Full maturity often occurs within about 6-8 years.

This cultivar is appreciated for its refined growth habit and dependable landscape performance. Its dense branching creates a full and balanced shrub. The plant combines durability with attractive year-round structure.

Small berries may develop after the flowering period. These fruits typically appear later in the growing season. They add subtle seasonal interest to the shrub.

The shrub’s dense branching and flexible stems help it handle moderate wind exposure. Established plants typically recover quickly after windy weather. Proper planting helps strengthen long-term stability.

The plant naturally produces closely spaced branches that create a full appearance. Over time, this branching habit forms a thick canopy. Light pruning can help maintain an even structure.

Many gardeners value this cultivar for its adaptability and resilience. It performs reliably in a variety of garden settings. This durability contributes to its popularity.

The shrub responds well to light shaping if needed. Occasional trimming helps maintain a balanced and tidy appearance. Heavy pruning is rarely necessary.

The plant forms a stable root system once established. This helps support healthy growth and improves resilience. Good soil preparation helps encourage strong roots.

Its dense branching and consistent growth habit help anchor planting designs. The shrub often adds stability to mixed plantings. Many gardeners use it to provide dependable structure throughout the year.
