Fruitland Elaeagnus

Elaeagnus pungens 'Fruitlandii'

The Fruitland Elaeagnus is an evergreen tree admired for its silvery-green leaves that glisten in the sunlight. In late autumn, clusters of white blossoms fill the air with a sweet fragrance, drawing in pollinators. Reaching about 10 feet tall and wide, it naturally forms a rounded silhouette, making it ideal for hedges or foundation plantings. With its unique texture and year-round brightness, it brings lasting charm to any landscape.

  • Evergreen tree
  • Fast growth rate with rounded habit
  • Silvery-green foliage with a shimmering effect
  • Fragrant white flowers in fall
  • Attracts pollinators and provides year-round interest

The Fruitland Elaeagnus thrives in full sun. It prefers well-drained soil and shows impressive drought resistance. Renowned for its adaptability, it performs well in a wide range of soil types, making it a standout choice for many Texas landscapes. Hardy in USDA Zones 7-9.

Once established, Fruitland Elaeagnus becomes notably low-maintenance and develops into a resilient shrub that requires only modest seasonal care. This is all it needs:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. After establishment, occasional deep watering during extended dry periods helps maintain healthy foliage and steady growth.
  • Pruning: Pruning is generally minimal and usually limited to removing damaged or overly long branches. Light trimming in late winter or early spring helps maintain a tidy shape while preserving the plant’s natural form.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilizer is rarely necessary in average soils. If growth appears slow, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring can encourage stronger seasonal development.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2-3 inch mulch layer around the root zone to conserve soil moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the base of the plant to prevent excess moisture accumulation.
  • Winter Care: Established plants tolerate seasonal cold within their growing zones without special protection. Younger shrubs benefit from mulch around the root zone during their first winters to stabilize soil temperatures.

Fruitland Elaeagnus is generally durable and rarely experiences serious problems. Occasional pests or environmental stresses may appear, but routine care keeps most issues manageable.

  • Scale Insects: Small bumps may appear along stems as scale insects attach and feed on plant sap. Horticultural oil treatments help reduce infestations.
  • Leaf Spot: Dark spots may occasionally appear on foliage during humid conditions. Removing affected leaves helps limit fungal spread.
  • Spider Mites: Fine speckling on leaves may occur during hot, dry weather. Periodic rinsing of foliage with water helps reduce mite populations.
  • Root Stress from Poor Drainage: Excessively wet soil may weaken the root system over time. Improving drainage helps maintain healthy roots.
  • Mechanical Damage: Broken or damaged branches may occur from wind or heavy contact. Pruning affected stems helps the plant recover quickly.

Fruitland Elaeagnus can live for several decades when grown in suitable conditions. Mature shrubs often remain healthy and vigorous for many years. Proper planting and occasional maintenance help support longevity.

Growth typically averages about 12-24 inches per year. Noticeable size develops within a few growing seasons. Full maturity often occurs within about 6-8 years.

This shrub is admired for its dense evergreen foliage and strong landscape durability. The plant maintains a full, refined appearance throughout the year. Its reliability makes it a popular choice for many gardens.

The small flowers can attract bees and other beneficial insects. Blooming shrubs help provide resources for pollinators during the growing season. This contributes to ecological diversity in garden spaces.

The shrub retains its leaves throughout the year, maintaining a consistent evergreen appearance. This helps provide structure in landscapes during all seasons. The foliage remains dense even in winter.

The shrub naturally produces closely spaced branches and abundant foliage. This growth habit creates a full, well-filled appearance. Mature plants often appear lush and compact.

Small flower buds develop along the stems before the bloom period begins. These buds are often subtle but visible upon close inspection. They signal the upcoming flowering cycle.

The evergreen foliage provides a steady visual presence in the garden. Leaves maintain their color and texture through much of the year. This helps the shrub remain attractive even outside its bloom period.

The shrub is known for its adaptability and durability in a range of garden settings. It can tolerate varying soil conditions once established. This resilience contributes to its popularity among gardeners.

The dense foliage and evergreen character allow it to blend well with other shrubs. It can complement both flowering and evergreen plants. This versatility makes it useful in many planting designs.
