Rhododendron ‘Conleb’

Encore Azalea Autumn Embers brings fiery color and multi-season interest to your landscape. Its glowing red single blooms are rich and dramatic, standing out beautifully against deep green foliage. This azalea flowers all throughout spring - providing consistent color all season long. With a compact and rounded growth habit, Autumn Embers reaches about 3 feet in height and 4 feet in width. It's a striking option for low hedges, borders, or patio containers where repeat blooms can be enjoyed up close.

  • Great for foundation beds, borders, or containers
  • Attracts pollinators

Autumn Embers grows best in part sun and well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA zones 7 through 10, it performs especially well in Texas’ varied climates. For best results, mulch the base to retain moisture and trim lightly after blooming to maintain its form and encourage new growth.

Encore Azalea Autumn Embers’s long-lasting color, evergreen foliage, and low-maintenance habit make it perfect for gardens across Texas. This is all it needs to grow beautifully:

  • Watering: Water consistently during the first growing season to establish deep, healthy roots. Once established, Autumn Embers tolerates short dry periods but performs best with occasional deep watering during extended drought. Avoid waterlogged soil, which can cause root decline. Mulching helps conserve moisture and maintain steady soil conditions.
  • Pruning: Light pruning after flowering encourages compact growth, dense branching, and reblooming. Remove spent flowers to prevent seed formation and preserve plant energy. Avoid heavy pruning in late fall or winter to prevent damage to tender new shoots.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release, acidic fertilizer formulated for azaleas in early spring or after bloom. Over-fertilization can cause soft, leggy growth and reduce flowering. In well-amended soils, supplemental feeding may not be necessary.
  • Mulching: Apply 2-3 inches of pine bark, pine needles, or other coarse organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the crown to prevent rot.
  • Winter Care: Hardy in USDA zones 7-9, Autumn Embers may benefit from a protective mulch layer during severe freezes. Container-grown plants may require temporary shelter in very cold weather.
  • Yellowing Leaves: May result from overwatering, poor drainage, or nutrient deficiencies. Ensure acidic, well-draining soil.
  • Leggy Growth: Can occur due to insufficient light or excessive fertilizer. Light pruning after blooms promotes fuller branching.
  • Root Rot: Overwatering or heavy soils can cause root decline. Plant in well-drained soil and avoid soggy conditions.
  • Pests: Occasionally affected by lace bugs, spider mites, or aphids. Inspect foliage and treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
  • Reduced Flowering: Stress from inconsistent watering, drought, or over-fertilization may reduce blooms. Timely deadheading and proper care encourage continuous flowering.

It grows moderately, reaching 3-5 feet tall and wide within 3-4 years. Its compact, rounded habit works well in borders, foundation beds, and container plantings.

With proper care, it can thrive for 10-15 years or more. Regular watering, well-drained acidic soil, and timely pruning help maintain health and flowering performance.

Yes. Its tubular flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies, while dense foliage provides shelter for small wildlife.

Moderately. Once established, it withstands short dry spells but blooms best with consistent moisture. Overwatering should be avoided to prevent root issues.

It prefers acidic, well-draining soils but adapts to sandy or amended soils. Heavy or alkaline soils may require adjustments for optimal growth.

Yes. Light annual pruning after flowering keeps the plant compact, encourages dense foliage, and promotes reblooming. Avoid heavy winter pruning.

Absolutely. Its vivid, repeat-blooming colors, compact habit, and evergreen foliage make it excellent for mass plantings, foundation beds, mixed borders, or accent plantings.

Maintain consistent moisture, deadhead spent flowers, and perform light pruning after bloom. Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can reduce flower production.

Its fiery orange-red flowers, repeat-blooming ability, evergreen foliage, and adaptability to partial shade make it a standout for low-maintenance gardens. It delivers vibrant color, structure, and long-lasting blooms with minimal care.
