Desert Eve Deep Rose Yarrow

Achillea millefolium 'Deep Rose'

Desert Eve Deep Rose Yarrow is a compact, early-flowering variety known for its dense clusters of magenta blooms and soft, silvery-green foliage. Starting in spring, the flowers rise above tidy mounds of foliage and hold their color well into fall. Reaching 18 inches tall and wide, this yarrow is ideal for borders, pollinator beds, or mass plantings.

  • A herbaceous perennial
  • Compact, spreading growth habit
  • Magenta flower clusters
  • Soft, fern-like foliage
  • Great for borders, cut flowers, and mass plantings

Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, it will feel right at home in your North Texas landscape. Plant it in full sun to ensure optimal growth and vibrant blooms. Desert Eve Deep Rose Yarrow thrives in well-drained soil. While it doesn't require much fertilizing, a general-use fertilizer in early spring can be beneficial.

With minimal intervention once established, Desert Eve Deep Rose Yarrow delivers long-lasting blooms and clean structure in both formal and naturalistic plantings. This is all it needs:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a deep, resilient root system. Once established, Desert Eve Deep Rose Yarrow is highly drought-tolerant and prefers infrequent, deep watering rather than consistently moist soil.
  • Pruning: Remove spent flower clusters to encourage continued blooming and maintain a neat appearance. Cutting the plant back lightly after a major bloom flush helps refresh foliage and promote a second wave of flowers.
  • Fertilizing: Desert Eve Deep Rose Yarrow requires very little fertilizer and performs best in moderately lean conditions. If growth appears weak, a light application of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring is sufficient.
  • Mulching: Apply a light mulch layer to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, especially during establishment. Keep mulch pulled back from the crown to prevent excess moisture, which can weaken the plant.
  • Winter Care: Desert Eve Deep Rose Yarrow is cold-hardy and typically needs no winter protection once established. Leave dried stems in place through winter for insulation, then cut back to the ground in early spring as new growth emerges.

Desert Eve Deep Rose Yarrow is exceptionally resilient, though a few issues may arise when conditions become overly rich, wet, or crowded:

  • Crown Rot: Plants may decline or collapse if moisture remains around the crown for extended periods. Improve drainage and keep soil slightly on the dry side to prevent recurrence.
  • Excessive Leafy Growth: Plants may produce abundant foliage with fewer flowers when grown in overly fertile conditions. Reduce fertilization and allow soil to lean out to restore bloom production.
  • Rust: Orange or reddish-brown pustules may appear on the undersides of leaves during cool, damp weather. Remove affected foliage promptly and improve airflow around plants.
  • Aphids: Clusters of small insects may gather on tender stems and flower buds, causing distortion and sticky residue. Rinse plants with water or apply insecticidal soap if populations increase.
  • Flopping Stems: Flower stems may lean outward if plants grow too lush or become overcrowded. Prune lightly and divide older clumps to restore upright structure.

It’s a long-lived perennial that typically performs well for 5-7 years. Occasional division helps maintain vigor and prolong its lifespan.

Desert Eve Deep Rose Yarrow establishes quickly and often flowers in its first growing season. Full clump size and peak flowering are usually reached by the second year.

It’s highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects. Its flat-topped flower clusters provide easy access to nectar throughout the bloom period.

Desert Eve Deep Rose Yarrow is strongly deer-resistant due to its aromatic, finely textured foliage. Browsing pressure is typically minimal, even in high-traffic areas.

It can be grown in containers with excellent drainage and restrained watering. Containers help showcase its blooms while preventing excess moisture buildup.

Desert Eve Deep Rose Yarrow benefits from division every 2-3 years to maintain compact growth. Division also helps rejuvenate older plants and improve flowering.

It works beautifully in mass plantings, creating bold color blocks with minimal maintenance. Uniform growth helps plantings remain tidy and cohesive.

This plant pairs well with ornamental grasses, lavender, salvia, and other drought-tolerant perennials. Soft grasses and upright companions enhance its strong flower form.

It spreads slowly and remains well-behaved in garden settings. Occasional division keeps it neatly contained.

Once established, Desert Eve Deep Rose Yarrow requires very little attention beyond occasional pruning. Its toughness makes it ideal for xeriscapes and large-scale plantings.
