Beelicious Purple Agastache

Agastache rugosa ‘Beelicious Purple’

If you're looking for a versatile plant for your borders or containers, consider Beelicious Purple Agastache. This beautiful perennial is noted for its delightful purple flower spikes that bloom in summer through fall. The foliage is stunning as well; the light green leaves are both striking and fragrant, emitting a pleasant minty scent.

This compact plant reaches 2 feet in height and 1 foot in width at maturity. It reaches full maturity approximately 3 months after planting.

  • Herbaceous perennial
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Purple flower spikes
  • Aromatic light green foliage
  • Attracts butterflies

Hardy in zones 6–10, this charming perennial will fare well in your North Texas flower bed. Plant it in well-drained soil and ensure it gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. With just a little care and attention, your Beelicious Purple Agastache will bring vibrant color and delightful fragrance to your borders and containers.

Extremely low-maintenance, Beelicious Purple Agastache rewards minimal care with years of beauty. Here’s all it needs:

  •  Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once mature, Beelicious Purple Agastache becomes highly drought-tolerant, preferring infrequent, deep watering over frequent shallow moisture. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils to prevent root rot.
  •  Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms throughout summer to extend flowering. After the final bloom flush in late fall, cut the plant back to 4-6 inches to prepare for dormancy. In spring, remove any winter-damaged stems to encourage strong new growth.
  •  Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a handful of compost. Excess fertilizer can cause lush but floppy growth and reduce flowering. This plant thrives in lean soils with minimal feeding.
  •  Mulching: Apply a thin, 1-2 inch layer of gravel or well-draining mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid heavy organic mulch, which traps excess water around the crown. A fresh top dressing each spring helps insulate the roots and maintain a clean appearance.
  •  Winter Care: Beelicious Purple Agastache is hardy and resilient once established. In colder regions, leave the last few inches of stems standing through winter to protect the crown and catch snow. Remove dead material in early spring when new shoots emerge.

Beelicious Purple Agastache is easy to grow and remarkably trouble-free, though a few minor problems can occur:

  •  Powdery Mildew: A white, powdery fungus that forms in humid or crowded conditions. Improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and prune affected foliage to prevent spread.
  •  Aphids: Small insects that cluster on new growth and flower stems. Rinse them off with a strong jet of water or apply insecticidal soap if necessary.
  •  Spider Mites: Microscopic pests that cause stippling and faded leaves in hot, dry weather. Hose the foliage occasionally or use horticultural oil during outbreaks.
  •  Rust: Appears as small orange pustules on leaf undersides. Prune away affected parts and improve air circulation to reduce reinfection.
  •  Fungal Stem Canker: May cause sudden stem collapse near the soil line. Cut out and discard affected stems; new shoots usually emerge unaffected.
  •  Slug or Snail Damage: Occasionally occurs in cool, damp conditions. Use organic slug bait or copper barriers to deter them.

It typically thrives for 3-5 years, though many gardeners enjoy longer success with regular division and excellent drainage. Each mature clump renews itself through basal shoots that rejuvenate the plant season after season.

It grows quickly, maturing within its first year to produce abundant blooms. By its second season, it reaches full flowering potential and develops a dense, bushy form.
