Garden Hose

Drip irrigation is an excellent choice for those without a traditional sprinkler system or a dedicated zone for their trees and shrubs.

Garden Hose Watering: Techniques and Tips

When watering with a garden hose, position it on the uphill side of the rootball. For watering multiple trees simultaneously, a hose splitter with individual valve controls (offering 1, 2, or 3 additional connections) can adjust flow rates for each tree's specific needs, or even shut off individual lines. While convenient, be aware that using a splitter will result in multiple hoses throughout your yard.

Achieving Optimal Flow Rates

We favor slower flow rates to prevent runoff, ensuring all water is absorbed by the rootball. If you observe any runoff, reduce the flow rate until it's eliminated. Our flow rate calculator can help verify correct watering duration and gallon application.

Automated Watering

For enhanced convenience, consider installing an electronic garden hose watering timer. These timers automate watering by allowing you to program frequency, duration, and start times. Typically installed directly at the faucet, if you need the faucet for other purposes, a splitter can be installed first, with the timer then attached to one side. This provides a dedicated hose for your trees and a free attachment for other uses. Many water timers are available, but a simple and affordable option is the RainBird (Model #1ZEHTMR).
