The Dahoon Holly is a beautiful evergreen holly this is grown as a large shrub or small tree with a pyramidal growth habit. The Dahoon Holly can be used for a variety of landscape settings as either a tall screen or a solitary specimen when grown with a single trunk in tree form. The Dahoon Holly has a dense canopy with small slender branches which are smooth and light to medium gray in color. The Dahoon holly can adapt to both sandy and moist fertile soils of wetland areas near streams and swamps. The Dahoon Holly has oblong leaves, 2 to 3 inches long, that are shiny and dark green with a lighter grayish green color underneath. The Dahoon Holly is distinguished from Savannah Holly and Nellie R Stevens Holly with its soft and smooth edged leaves. In late spring the Dahoon Holly produces small greenish white flowers that appear in clusters towards branch tips. In the fall the Dahoon Holly produces brilliant bright red berries that are 1/4” in diameter and persist throughout the winter. The berries on a Dahoon Holly are very attractive to wildlife and serve as an excellent food source.
