The Leyland Cypress is a cross between the Monterey Cypress and the Alaskan Cedar. The Leyland Cypress has a distinctive pyramidal form with graceful pendulous branches. Leyland Cypress trees have fine dark green branchlets arranged in flattened slightly drooping sprays and the individual leaves on a Leyland Cypress appear scale-like that are produced on rounded shoots. Younger Leyland Cypress trees have scaly reddish-brown bark and when older appears gray-brown and is longitudinally furrowed. Leyland Cypress are best suited for well-drained soils in full sun but Leyland Cypress can be grown in partial shade. Leyland Cypress trees are often used to create formal hedges, screens and windbreaks because of their extremely attractive and dense canopy.
