The East Palatka Holly is one of several popular hybrids between the Dahoon and American Holly. Like the other hybrids, which includes the Eagleston, Foster and Savannah Hollies, the East Palatka can be utilized as either a tall screen or a single specimen when pruned into tree form. The East Palatka Holly differentiates itself from the other crosses with its thinner, more flexible and rounded leaves that have only one spine at the tip. In the fall and into the winter the East Palatka is filled with clusters of bright red berries which creates a vibrant contrast with its glossy green leaves. In comparison to the other hybrids the East Palatka Holly has a similar pyramidal structure but when mature it is taller and wider with a more open growth habit. Like most hollies the East Palatka is very drought tolerant and will grow in full sun or partial shade. The East Palatka can also adapt to both sandy and clay soils with a moderate growth rate. The roots of an East Palatka Holly are rarely invasive due to their great number and relatively small diameter.
