Best Months to Plant

Crape Myrtle Tuscarora

Customers regularly ask what time of the year is best for planting trees because they are concerned about the health, appearance and survival of their trees. Customers frequently relate shock to trees that are planted in warmer weather and freeze damage to trees that are planted in colder weather. In order to discuss these concerns we will analyze and discuss the calendar year by month.

CONTAINER TREES

Red OakIt is my professional opinion that the significance of planting container trees in hot, mild or cold temperatures is so minimal that it does not impact their survival rate. If our watering maintenance schedule is followed, we can plant container trees at 100°F and you will not see a difference in your tree. The reason for not seeing any signs of shock is that 100% of the roots are in the container. We also prewater each container before delivery and carefully remove the tree from the container to insure that the maximum amount of roots are planted with the tree. Our conclusion is that it does not matter when you plant container trees.

DUG TREES

Dug TreeA dug tree is one grown on a farm and dug out of the ground either manually or with a machine. Trees dug out of the ground have 60% of their roots left behind so they have less ability to take up water into the roots and up to the leaves during warmer, drier weather which leads to shock or burning leaves. Each of the following months is rated on a three tier scale of excellent (avg. high temperature below 80°F), Good (avg. high temperature between 80°F and 90°F) or Fair (avg. high temperature above 90°F) as to the best chance of not incurring shock.
